Ruby Sales Rayder A fine Christian woman and beloved mother, Ruby Irene Sales Rayder, age 83, of Lake Village, Arkansas passed on to be with God, Sunday, September 2, 2012, at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. She was born into a strong, loving, and hardworking family on October 29, 1928, in Leachville, Arkansas, the daughter of the late Lee Olen and Evelyn Mae Gatlin Sales. Ruby had a passion for education and helping others through her work with Chicot County Extension Service. She remained involved even after retirement with the 4-H Club and the Chicot County Fair for many years. At the age of fifty she returned to college at the University of Arkansas at Monticello to further her education. Ruby was an inspiration to many with her desire to learn. She was very active in the community and Chicot Baptist Church and loved volunteering her time to various needs. Her faith in God and perseverance through difficult times was a driving force in her life. She loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in a kind and encouraging way. She taught each of us what love truly means and that you do not give in or give up just because life gets tough. Ruby enjoyed growing plants and trees of any variety and taught her children and grandchildren how to root new plants from cuttings and seeds, as well as how to use the fruits of the plants to enjoy as jams, jellies, and preserves. She always loved watching the local crops develop and change from season to season and enjoyed the smell of the earth during spring tillage. She enjoyed tatting, the art of tying knots to make lace, and in 2008, enjoyed special recognition by receiving the Arkansas Governor's Award in Folk Art for her exquisite work. Several of her pieces are featured in museums, and her art will live on in the minds and hands of her many students. Ruby was warmly received in heaven by her husband, Richard Layne Rayder, grandson, Kenneth Hubbard and her parents Lee Olen and Evelyn Mae Gatlin Sales. She is survived by 2 sons: Tom Lee Rayder of Lake Village Arkansas and Michael Rayder of Memphis, Tennessee; 4 daughters: Ardith Hubbard of Searcy, Arkansas, Jo Ann Okerson of Memphis, Tennessee, Kathi Mazzanti of Jackson, Missouri and Nancy Smith of Glen Allan, Mississippi; a brother, Allen Sales of Kansas City, Missouri; a sister, Mattie Hamlin of DeBary, Florida; 9 grandchildren: Kathy Miller, Michael Mazzanti, Rebecca Buchheit, Lauren Brown, Harrison Brown, Aly Smith, Bryce Rayder, Emily Rayder, Lilly Rayder; 4 great-grandchildren: Naomi Miller, Anna Miller, Tormey McManaman, Elise Buchheit; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 1:00 to 2:00 PM Saturday, September 8, 2012, with funeral services following at 2:00 PM at Chicot Baptist Church with Rev. David Powers officiating. Burial will be in Lake Village Cemetery under the direction of Bishop Funeral Home of Lake Village.
