Please share a memory of Charles to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Charles Dickens “CD” Johnson, age 97, of Lake Village, died peacefully at his home December 28, 2021. Charles was born April 25, 1924 to his parents, William and Alice Johnson in Greenwood, MS. In 1941 he joined the Navy at age 17 during the beginning of the US entering WWII. Serving aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS San Jacinto for the entire time, he saw action in the Philippines, the Marianas, Iwo Jima, Okinawa and others, and was present in Tokyo Bay during the surrender of the Japanese in September 1945. After the Navy he lived in the Pacific NW, and for a period worked as a Lumberjack. During this time he married his first wife, Micki Smith and had three children. He also started working as a Foreman on Smith Brothers Farms. After this relationship ended, Charles moved to Arkansas and married Sarah Tipton, on October 15, 1966. He was an expert mechanic and could fix most anything, and for the rest of his working life was self-employed primarily as a plumber, but also as general handyman. CD retired at the age of 62 and enjoyed being out “on the place” doing many tasks. He loved all animals; he raised bees, cows, goats, horses and dogs. He enjoyed spending time with his animals, watching the birds and other wildlife that would enter the pasture. Also, keeping the grass mowed, checking the mail, and working in the shop on a multitude of projects. He loved when he had visitors so he could put them to work. He enjoyed the great outdoors, was a private pilot, loved to canoe down the Mighty Mississippi, and traveled on his motorcycle cross country. He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 54 years, Sarah Johnson; one daughter, Rosemarie Pessemier; two sisters, Adrion Smith and Mami Klones; and two brothers, William Johnson, and Edward LeLouis. CD is survived by one brother, Anthony (Mary) LeLouis; four boys, Charlie (Nese) Johnson of Seattle, WA, Matt (Terri) Johnson of Fox Island, WA, Jon (Heather) Johnson of Fort Myers, FL, Rusty(Carrie) Johnson of Lake Village, AR; one favorite son-in-law, Bill (Stephanie) Pessemier of Port Orchard, WA; seven grandchildren, Lindsay Dunlap, Laura Horstman, Ryan Johnson, Adam Buckley, Alyssa, Miranda, and Mason Johnson; eight great-grandchildren, Landon, Noah, and Miarose Mueller, William Vian, Wallace Horstman, Carter, Gavin, and Piper Johnson; and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family.
